Policy Enforcement

Smoking and Tobacco Policy Enforcement

The enforcement of this policy will be initially educational, focused on 1) informing all members of the UC Santa Barbara community and campus visitors of this new policy, and 2) cessation resources. The success of this policy depends upon the thoughtfulness, consideration, and cooperation of smokers and non-smokers alike. The administration and UCSB Smoke-Free Campus Steering Committee will review these enforcement strategies after the policy takes effect and determine if further enforcement protocols are necessary. All suggestions can be referred to the UCSB Smoke-Free Campus Steering Committee at info@tobaccofree.ucsb.edu

Non-compliance and Repeat Offenders

Through the authority provided in California Government Code 7597.1, the University reserves the right to initiate disciplinary procedures for repeated violations of the policy. Offenders will be referred to the appropriate campus contact as follows:

How to Approach Someone Violating the Adopted Policy

Respectfully approach the individual and inform them that as a system-wide policy, all UC Santa Barbara staff, faculty, students, visitors, and guests are required to follow it. Then ask them politely to comply. See the videos below for examples on how to approach someone violating the policy.
